What Is Clairaudience?
Clairaudience is the ability to hear the voices of non-physical beings, including angels, ancestors, healing guides and loved ones who have passed. It’s clear hearing. Some people hear these messages directly. Others receive them without being fully aware of it, like subliminal messages that still influence you even though you don’t consciously hear them.
How Clairaudience Shows Up
A voice when no one is there
For many people, clairaudience is as simple as hearing someone talk to you when no one is around. You hear your name called, or you hear a voice of caution or a voice of guidance. Either way, it sounds like someone is right there with you, except no one is.
Dreams
Some people communicate clairaudiently in their dreams. Many people have met up with a loved one who died in a dream. These conversations can have a huge impact. People who’ve had them have a strong sense that they were really with their loved one and that the conversation was real, even though it happened on a different plane.
A calling
There are many famous stories of people receiving direction from voices outside the body: prophets like Moses and the Ten Commandments, or the Oracle of Delphi in ancient Greece, who received messages from Apollo. In a more ordinary way, many people talk about being “called” to do something, or having a calling from a higher power. But ask who’s on the other end of the line, and most people aren’t sure.
Who Are You Talking To?
There’s a vast range of non-physical beings, some helpful and some not. So the first step is figuring out who you’re communicating with. Once you know who’s calling and what they want, you can choose to continue the conversation or end it.
From there, there’s a lot for you to have. Instead of waiting for a call, you can start a conversation with a being who has a skill you want to learn or a healing you want to receive. You can deepen a relationship with an ancestor or a guide who’s been with you for lifetimes. And you can get space from beings who don’t have your best interests at heart, effectively deleting them from your contacts.
Signs Your Clairaudience Is Already Working
You hear your name called when no one is there.
A word, phrase or song pops into your head with perfect timing.
You’ve had vivid conversations with loved ones in dreams.
You’ve felt “called” to do something important.
You hear guidance that doesn’t sound like your own voice.
How to Develop Clairaudience
Ground first. It gives you a stable, safe place to listen from.
Ask who it is. Before you take advice from a voice, find out whose it is. (Sometimes it’s a person, not a spirit. That’s telepathy.)
Set boundaries. You get to decide who you talk to and when.
Listen in quiet. Messages are easier to hear when your space isn’t full of everyone else’s noise.
Quick Answers
Is clairaudience the same as hearing voices?
Clairaudience can sound like a voice talking to you, or it can feel more like a thought, a word or a sense of being told something. Either way, you get to choose who you listen to. If you’re hearing voices that are distressing or out of your control, please talk to a doctor or mental health professional.
How is clairaudience different from telepathy?
Telepathy is communication with people who are alive and in a body. Clairaudience is hearing beings who aren’t.
Where to Start
At Clairity School, we begin teaching students about all of the intuitive abilities in our year-long Intuitive Training, including how to communicate with non-physical beings and set boundaries where needed. In Trance Medium Training, students take it a step further, channeling a high-level being as a healing for themselves and others, which includes clairaudience. Explore the other abilities on the Clairs page.
